The Atlas Classic series uses a 1.5-inch square rail with a snap-lock bracket; the Atlas Pro series stepped up to a 2-inch rail with a concealed fastener. Check the inside face of your end post for a stamped date code and series mark, usually within six inches of the base. If the stamp has weathered off, measure the rail width and note whether your brackets are surface-mounted or recessed.

We install OEM Atlas components where they’re available, but we’ve also vetted two aftermarket manufacturers whose rail profiles match Atlas dimensions within a thirty-second of an inch. The aftermarket brackets cost less and carry the same powder-coat warranty, though we always flag when an OEM post cap or specialty gate hinge is the only part that will fit. For Atlas systems installed before 2015, some rail profiles were discontinued; in those cases, we splice in a transition bracket rather than replace the whole run.

Signs Your Atlas Fence Installation Is Failing

• Gate sagging or dragging. The top hinge rail on Atlas gates carries the full cantilever load, and the steel insert inside the aluminum rail corrodes where the powder coat was nicked during install. Once that insert loses section, the gate drops by a quarter-inch every season until the latch won’t catch.
• Rail popping out of brackets. Atlas snap-lock brackets rely on a plastic wedge that UV-degrades after seven to ten years in South Bay sun. When the wedge cracks, thermal expansion pops the rail free on hot afternoons, usually in July or August.
• Post leaning at the base. San Jose’s adobe clay expands when wet and contracts in drought, working the concrete footing loose. Atlas posts set with standard post mix in 2018 or 2019 are showing this now, especially on east-facing slopes in Willow Glen where morning sun hits frost-prone soil.
• Corrosion blooming at bracket seams. Atlas uses 6063-T6 aluminum with a polyester powder coat, but galvanic corrosion sets in where stainless fasteners contact the aluminum and the coating was thin at the factory. It starts as white fuzz and progresses to pitting within two years.
• Panel rattling in wind. The tension bands that hold Atlas pickets to rails fatigue at the bend radius. After enough Santa Ana events or winter storm fronts, the pickets go slack and the whole panel hums at 15 mph.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of checks any owner can do safely. Verify the gate latch alignment with a level. Tighten visible bracket screws with a socket set, not a drill, to avoid stripping the aluminum threads. Clear soil buildup at post bases so you can see whether the concrete footing has shifted.

Where DIY goes wrong is post-setting and gate hanging. A leaning Atlas post usually means the footing has failed below grade; digging out and re-pouring to depth with the right slump concrete in San Jose’s expansive clay is not a weekend project. Gates over 42 inches wide need a steel insert sized to the exact rail bore, and if you force the wrong insert, the rail splits when you torque the hinge bolt.
