Tamko Driveway & Pavers: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

Tamko driveway and paver systems installed in San Jose typically run $8,260-$21,240 for a full paver driveway replacement, with repair of failed sections starting around $2,950. We stock Tamko-compatible edge restraints, bedding sand, and polymeric jointing compounds on our trucks, and most Tamko paver repairs in the San Jose area are completed in a single day. Homeowners usually discover the problem after rain: joint sand washing out between pavers, edge restraints pulling away from the border, or individual pavers settling into a bowl-shaped depression where the bedding layer has eroded.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko’s paver and hardscape line centers on the Belgard Architectural Series (distributed through Tamko’s partnership network) and the Tamko Paver System residential line sold through select California dealers from 2012-2019. The critical compatibility point is the edge restraint profile: Tamko-specified aluminum L-channel (1.5″ × 1.5″ × 0.125″) differs from the standard 1″ plastic edging common at big-box retailers. Using the wrong edge restraint causes the 45-degree herringbone pattern Tamko recommends to drift within two rainy seasons.

To identify your system, check for a Tamko lot stamp on the paver edge (usually the long side, ink-jet coded with month/year and plant code). If your driveway was installed 2015-2019 in the Willow Glen, Almaden Valley, or West San Jose areas, there’s a strong chance it’s the Tamko Paver System with the 60mm thickness profile. We carry both OEM Tamko-compatible edge restraints and the Perma-Edge commercial-grade aluminum alternative, which exceeds Tamko’s spec and carries a 15-year warranty vs. Tamko’s original 10-year material warranty. Signs Your Tamko Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Tamko Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Joint sand washing out after light rain. This indicates polymeric sand degradation, which in San Jose’s clay-heavy soil zones (particularly near Almaden and the foothills) accelerates when subsurface moisture wicks upward through poorly compacted bedding. The sand loses its binder and evacuates through the joints.
  • Pavers rocking underfoot or sounding hollow when tapped. The bedding layer of crushed stone (Tamko specifies ASTM C33 No. 57) has settled or washed out, leaving an air gap. In San Jose’s freeze-thaw-light but earthquake-active climate, minor ground shifts compound this.
  • Edge restraints pulling away from the border, creating a gap. The 12″ spikes securing the L-channel have corroded (common with the original galvanized spikes near the bay’s salt air) or the channel itself has deformed under vehicle loading.
  • Surface staining that doesn’t power-wash off. This is typically efflorescence, mineral salts migrating through the paver body. In Tamko’s lighter color blends (Sierra Tan, Desert Sand), it reads as obvious blotching and signals moisture intrusion through failed jointing.
  • Sunken area forming a bowl, often near downspout outlets. The sub-base (Tamko calls for 4″ minimum of compacted aggregate base) has saturated and lost compaction. San Jose’s winter concentrated rainfall, delivered in bursts rather than steady soak, overwhelms inadequate drainage.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Tamko paver driveway work in San Jose, here’s how pricing breaks down:

Scope Price Range
Section repair (up to 100 sq ft, re-level + re-sand) $2,950-$5,900
Edge restraint replacement (linear ft, both sides) $1,770-$3,540
Full paver driveway replacement $8,260-$21,240
Driveway sealing (maintenance, not repair) $295-$825

The spread depends on three factors: sub-base condition (if we lift pavers and find saturated clay, we excavate and recompact), paver availability (discontinued Tamko color blends require sourcing from salvage or full replacement with matched alternative), and drainage correction (rerouting downspouts or adding channel drains). Every quote is a flat written price with line-item scope before work starts, under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation; material warranties run through the manufacturer. We pull permits when required by San Jose’s paving code and pass inspection before final invoice.

There’s a clear line here. An owner can safely check joint sand depth (should be 1/8″ below paver chamfer), verify downspout discharge points (water should exit 4+ feet from pavement edge), and photograph edge restraint gaps for documentation. These checks cost nothing and tell us what’s happening before we arrive.

Where DIY goes wrong: re-leveling pavers without checking sub-base compaction guarantees the same settlement in six months. Power-washing efflorescence without identifying the moisture source drives water deeper. And installing generic plastic edging instead of Tamko-compatible aluminum channel voids any remaining material warranty. The real risk isn’t injury, it’s spending $800 in materials and a weekend to produce a repair that fails before the next rainy season.
