CGI Bathroom Remodeling: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

CGI bathroom remodeling in San Jose typically runs $10,620-$33,040 installed, depending on whether we’re updating a single wet area or reconfiguring the full footprint with new plumbing rough-ins. We stock CGI-compatible vanities, shower enclosures, and fixture hardware for same-day starts on most replacement projects, and we carry KraftMaid and Cambria lines when a full material swap makes more sense than matching discontinued CGI SKUs. Most San Jose homeowners discover their CGI installation needs attention when the original contractor’s waterproofing detail fails at the shower pan-to-wall transition, or when the particleboard substructure beneath a CGI vanity swells after a slow drip the owner never noticed.

Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI produced several bathroom product lines through the mid-2000s to early 2010s, primarily under the “Designer Series” and “Builder Select” labels. The Designer Series used ¾-inch furniture-grade plywood substrates with European-style hinge boring at 35mm, while Builder Select shifted to medium-density fiberboard with thermofoil wrap after 2008. To identify what you have, check the hinge cup bore: 35mm with a metal serial stamp inside the cabinet box indicates Designer Series; 26mm or unmarked suggests Builder Select or a later budget line.

The critical compatibility gotcha in San Jose’s market is the vanity depth. CGI Designer Series bath vanities were spec’d at 21 inches deep, not the standard 21½ inches that dominates current KraftMaid and Wellborn catalogs. This half-inch matters in tight San Jose bathrooms, particularly in the older Willow Glen cottages where a toilet placement was drawn to 1940s clearances. We keep both depths in our quoting system, and we’ll measure your rough opening before recommending OEM-match versus a quality aftermarket equivalent. Rowan Construction Group San Jose is an independent service provider with no affiliation to CGI.

Signs Your CGI Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

Signs Your CGI Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
  • Soft or discolored baseboards near the vanity. CGI’s Builder Select line used particleboard toe kicks without a separate waterproof membrane. In San Jose’s older slab-on-grade homes, seasonal moisture wicking through the concrete meets that particleboard and the edge swells within 18-24 months of a minor leak. We see this most often in Almaden Valley homes built during the 1986-1992 construction wave.
  • Shower door that no longer latches or drags. CGI’s framed enclosures relied on a nylon roller system with a 5/16-inch axle pin. After roughly 8-10 years of hard water exposure, the pin corrodes and the roller housing cracks. The replacement part is technically available, but the axle spacing (11¾ inches center-to-center on 48-inch doors) doesn’t match any current hardware standard.
  • Thermofoil delamination starting at heat sources. CGI’s foil-wrapped doors near hair dryers or heated towel bars show bubbling first at the vertical stile nearest the heat. The adhesive was rated to 140°F; a mounted hair dryer on high exceeds that in about 4 minutes of continuous use. Once delamination starts, moisture follows the seam.
  • Drawer boxes that rack or bind. CGI used a ½-inch Baltic birch dovetail on Designer Series, but shifted to stapled particleboard with melamine wrap on later production. The stapled joints fail at the front corner first because that’s where the most leverage concentrates when a loaded drawer closes hard. In San Jose’s hard water areas, mineral buildup on the slide mechanism accelerates the racking.
  • Musty odor that returns after cleaning. This usually traces to the CGI shower surround’s fiberglass backing, which was bonded to drywall rather than cement board in many original installations. The fiberglass shell itself is fine; the failure is in the substrate behind it, which traps moisture and grows mold where you can’t see it without removing the surround.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope San Jose Price Range
CGI vanity replacement (same footprint, stock finish) $945-$3,540
CGI shower surround removal + cement board + new surround $5,310-$14,160
Full CGI bathroom remodel (wet area + vanity + fixtures) $10,620-$33,040
Small CGI bathroom remodel (5×8 or smaller, no plumbing move) $5,900-$14,160
Tub-to-shower conversion (CGI removal, new pan, glass enclosure) $4,130-$11,800

The range depends on three factors we quote in writing before starting: whether we’re working within the existing wet-area footprint or moving drains, whether the original CGI installation used cement board or drywall behind surrounds, and whether your finish selection is in-stock or special-order. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, that written price includes all parts, labor, permit fees if required, and disposal. No change proceeds without a signed change order, which is why our projects finish within a few percent of the agreed number. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation and workmanship; manufacturer defects on new materials are handled through the brand’s warranty channel.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground for most CGI issues. You can confirm the model series yourself: open the cabinet, photograph any stamps inside the door bore or on the drawer box underside, and measure the vanity depth at the outside of the face frame. If you find soft particleboard at the toe kick, you’ve identified the problem; what you can’t safely assess is whether the moisture has traveled to the wall cavity behind.

Where DIY goes wrong is the shower surround. CGI’s fiberglass units were installed with a flanged edge that overlaps the finish wall material. Removing that flange without damaging the waterproofing layer beneath takes a specific sequence, and reinstalling without creating a new leak path requires a flood test we document with photos. The California Building Code requires a 24-hour flood test on any shower pan modification; we include that documentation in our standard photo record. If your project involves electrical work near water, or if you suspect mold behind the surround, that’s a trained-technician situation.
