Atlas Driveway & Pavers: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

Atlas driveway and paver systems in San Jose typically run $8,260-$21,240 installed for paver driveways and $5,310-$14,160 for concrete, with most Atlas-compatible replacement sections and edge restraints stocked on our trucks for same-day repair. We carry the full Atlas paver line, including the ABP and AB Classic series edge restraints, the permeable paver grid systems, and the structural base panels that see the most failure in San Jose’s clay-heavy soils. Most homeowners notice the problem first as a visible dip near the garage threshold or a wobble underfoot where the interlock has lost its bedding sand, usually after two or three wet seasons when the substrate has shifted.

Which Atlas Models This Applies To

Atlas manufactures three distinct product lines that show up regularly in San Jose installations: the AB Classic concrete pavers (60mm and 80mm thicknesses), the ABP permeable pavers with their 12mm aggregate void spacing, and the AB Grid structural base system used for load-bearing residential driveways. The part you need depends on what failed. Edge restraint failure, the most common call we get, requires matching the restraint profile: AB Classic uses a snap-edge PVC restraint with 10-inch galvanized spikes on 12-inch centers, while ABP permeable installations need the taller 7-inch profile to accommodate the deeper 8-inch aggregate base.

To identify your Atlas series, check the paver itself for the stamped “AB” or “ABP” mark on the spacer lug, or measure the joint gap: Classic runs 2-3mm, permeable runs 8-12mm. If the edge restraint is what failed, look for the Atlas logo molded into the PVC; aftermarket equivalents from Permaloc or Pave Edge will mate but may use different spike gauges, which matters in San Jose’s expansive clay soils where undersized spikes walk out in a single winter. We stock OEM Atlas restraints and the two aftermarket brands we’ve vetted for compatibility, and we’ll show you the stamp on the part before we install it.

Signs Your Atlas Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Atlas Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Sunken or dipped sections near the garage or walkway edge. This usually means the aggregate base has washed out or compacted unevenly, often from irrigation overspray or poor initial compaction. In the Rose Garden and Naglee Park neighborhoods, we see this where original installs skipped the geotextile separation layer between native clay and the 3/4-inch base rock.
  • Wobble or rocking underfoot, especially after rain. The bedding sand layer has migrated out through the joints, a problem accelerated by polymeric sand breakdown. Atlas pavers with their beveled edges are particularly sensitive to this; once the bedding drops below 3/4 inch, the interlock fails and the pavers float.
  • Weeds or grass growing through the joints. This signals joint sand failure, but in Atlas permeable installations it can also mean the 12mm voids have clogged with fine sediment. The fix differs: Classic needs joint sand replacement with fresh polymeric, while ABP needs the aggregate base flushed and recharged.
  • Edge restraints pulling away or heaving. The PVC has cracked from UV exposure or the spikes have backed out. Atlas’s black PVC holds up better than generic gray, but after eight to ten years in San Jose’s sun, it gets brittle. We replace with the same profile but switch to longer spikes in clay soils.
  • Efflorescence that won’t clean off, or spalling on the paver face. This is paver material failure, not a substrate issue. Atlas’s AB Classic is dense enough to resist this in most cases; when we see it, it’s usually a batch from the mid-2010s with higher porosity. Individual paver replacement is the fix, and we keep common colors in stock.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Atlas driveway and paver repair in San Jose, our installed pricing breaks down as follows:

Service Price Range
Edge restraint replacement (per linear foot) $12-$28
Bedding sand and joint sand renewal (per sq ft) $4-$9
Base repair and re-compaction (per sq ft) $8-$18
Individual paver replacement (per paver, with match) $35-$75
Full section removal and rebuild (per sq ft) $18-$38
Driveway sealing (per sq ft) $0.85-$2.25

What drives the range: access (steep San Jose lots add labor), how far the base failure extends beyond the visible damage, and whether your Atlas color is still in production. We quote a flat price after exposing the substrate, not before, because we’ve seen too many “simple” edge repairs turn into 40-square-foot rebuilds once the sand comes out. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, that written price is firm: no change proceeds without a signed change order, which is why our projects finish within a few percent of the number we agreed on. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the workmanship, and we document the before condition with photos you’ll receive before we leave.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the point where DIY costs more than calling us.

What you can check safely: lift one paver at the edge with a flat pry bar to see if the bedding sand is still granular or has turned to mud; measure the joint gap with a ruler to confirm your Atlas series; and check the edge restraint for visible cracks or spike heads that have backed out. Take photos. That documentation alone saves us time and saves you money.

Where DIY goes wrong: compacting the base without a plate compactor rated for 5,000 pounds of centrifugal force, which leaves soft spots that telegraph through in six months; using play sand or all-purpose sand instead of ASTM C-144 bedding sand, which washes out; or skipping the geotextile layer that separates San Jose’s expansive clay from your base rock. We’ve rebuilt three homeowner repairs in Willow Glen alone this year where the fix lasted one rainy season. If the failure extends more than a few pavers, or if you’re seeing dips in the driving lane where cars track, the base is compromised and partial repair won’t hold. Call (669) 271-8644 and we’ll quote it flat, in writing, before anyone picks up a tool.
