Which Cambria Models This Applies To

Cambria’s paver line for residential driveways falls into two series: the traditional cobble-style Cambridge series and the larger-format Berkeley series, both manufactured with a 60mm thickness rating for vehicular load. The Cambridge uses a 4″ × 8″ × 2.36″ module with a beveled edge; the Berkeley runs 8″ × 8″ × 2.36″ with a chamfered top edge. To identify your series, flip a loose paver and check the molded stamp on the bedding face, or measure across the visible surface and note whether joints run in a herringbone or basketweave pattern.

The OEM part question matters less with Cambria pavers than with mechanical systems, but it matters for color matching. Cambria batches its concrete dye lots, and a paver installed in 2019 will not match a 2024 replacement pulled from current stock, even in the same nominal color. We maintain a relationship with Cambria’s western distribution center in Livermore to access archived lots when possible, and when that’s not possible, we source from Belgard or Techo-Bloc for equivalent spec with closer color proximity. For edge restraints, we stock Dimex and PaveTech aluminum systems on the truck; the plastic edging that Cambria bundles with some contractor packs degrades faster in San Jose’s UV exposure and we do not reuse it.

Signs Your Cambria Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Sunken or dipped sections near the garage apron. This indicates base erosion, usually from inadequate compaction of the Class II aggregate base during original install, or from water intrusion through failed joint sand. In the Almaden Valley and other San Jose areas with clay-heavy soil, freeze-thaw cycling is minimal but seasonal expansion-contraction still works aggregate downward over five to seven years.
• Weeds or grass growing between joints. Polymeric sand binds when wetted and cured; once it breaks down, organic material fills the void and root systems dislodge neighboring pavers. We see this most often on north-facing driveways in Willow Glen where moisture lingers.
• Chipped or spalled paver surfaces. Cambria’s 60mm rating handles passenger vehicles, but point loads from trailer jacks, motorcycle kickstands, or contractor equipment can fracture the face. The underlying concrete is standard 4,000 PSI mix; it does not have the flexural strength of porcelain or natural stone alternatives.
• Efflorescence, the white powdery film on paver faces. This is calcium hydroxide migrating to the surface, common in San Jose’s first rainy season after install and usually self-limiting. Persistent efflorescence after two winters suggests excessive moisture trapped below, often from a missing or punctured geotextile fabric layer.
• Loose or rocking pavers underfoot. Individual units that shift indicate loss of bedding sand, which can result from improper initial screeding or from base failure below. A single loose paver in an otherwise sound field is usually fixable; a cluster of three or more suggests systemic base degradation requiring section removal.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check: lift one paver at the problem edge and photograph the base layer. If you see clean, angular aggregate with no mud or organic intrusion, the fix may be limited to re-bedding and re-sanding. Measure your paver and note the pattern orientation before disturbing anything, or reassembly becomes a puzzle.

Where DIY goes wrong: base compaction requires a plate compactor rated for 3,000+ lbs of centrifugal force, operated in 6″ lifts, with moisture content tested to optimum. Hand tamping or rental equipment without vibration frequency control produces a false surface that settles within one season. More critically, driveway paver systems in San Jose require compliance with Chapter 18A of the California Building Code for drainage slope, minimum 1% away from structures; an improper pitch directs water toward the foundation, and that liability belongs to whoever signed the permit.
