Cover Windows & Doors: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Cover-compatible windows and doors across San Jose, with most replacements running $5,310-$17,700 installed depending on size, glazing package, and whether the frame needs reframing. Most Cover units we see are in homes built between 2005 and 2018, and the failure pattern is almost always the same: the homeowner notices a draft they can’t trace, or the sash won’t stay up on a double-hung, and they realize the balance system or weatherstrip has given out after 12-18 years of Santa Clara Valley’s wide temperature swings. In Willow Glen and Almaden Valley, we regularly see premature seal failure on south-facing Cover units where the thermal stress cycles hardest.

Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover manufactured windows and doors under several series lines, and the part you need depends on which generation you own. The CS200 and CS400 vinyl double-hung series, common in San Jose tract builds from 2008-2015, use a proprietary constant-force balance system with a 5/8-inch wide balance shoe that differs from the standard 1/2-inch industry spec. The aluminum-clad CW500 and CW700 series, found more often in custom and infill work near Japantown and Rose Garden, use a block-and-tackle balance with a stamped steel bracket that Cover sourced from two different vendors across production years. Check the spacer bar between the glass panes for a stamped date code, or the edge of the sash for a small foil label with a nine-digit serial. If the label is gone, measure the balance shoe width and the visible glass dimensions to the nearest 1/8 inch.

We carry OEM-spec balances, weatherstrip, and sash locks for all major Cover series, plus quality aftermarket equivalents where the OEM part is obsolete. For the CS200 balance system, the aftermarket equivalent runs about 15% less and carries the same 10-year warranty; for the CW700’s clad exterior corner joints, we use OEM only, because the thermal expansion coefficient of the aftermarket aluminum extrusion has proven inconsistent in our San Jose installs.

Signs Your Cover Windows & Doors Is Failing

Signs Your Cover Windows & Doors Is Failing
  • Sash drops or won’t stay open. The constant-force balance has lost tension, usually from a fatigued spring or a broken balance shoe. On Cover’s CS200 series, this happens predictably around year 14 in homes without exterior shading, because the black vinyl frame absorbs heat and accelerates spring fatigue.
  • Fog between the glass panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed, allowing moisture into the air space. In San Jose’s climate, this typically appears first on east-facing units where morning condensation cycles stress the seal edge; once visible, the Low-E coating is already degrading and the thermal performance is gone.
  • Draft at the sill or meeting rail. The compression weatherstrip has hardened or the pile weatherstrip at the sash edges has worn flat. Cover used a dual-durometer bulb seal in later production that outlasts the early single-durometer design by roughly 40%, so the replacement part depends on your unit’s date code.
  • Difficulty latching or unlocking. The multipoint lock mechanism has corroded or the keeper has shifted with frame settlement. In older San Jose homes with raised foundations, we see this most where seasonal soil movement has racked the frame out of square.
  • Water staining at the interior sill. The weep channels in the frame bottom are clogged with debris, or the sill pan flashing was omitted or compromised during original installation. This is less a part failure than an installation detail, but the repair requires removing the sash to access and clear the drainage path properly.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Window replacement in San Jose runs $5,310-$17,700 for full-unit replacement, with most Cover jobs we quote falling in the $7,800-$12,400 range for three to five typical double-hungs. The spread depends on four factors: whether the existing frame is square and structurally sound (reframing adds $340-$825 per opening), whether the exterior cladding needs repair after removal, whether you upgrade from single-pane to dual-pane or dual-pane with Low-E, and whether the job requires scaffold or ladder work above the first floor.

Our quotes are flat prices with a written scope, delivered before any work starts. The number includes the unit, installation, interior and exterior trim, insulation in the rough opening, and disposal of the old unit. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, that written price is binding; if we find rot or structural damage we didn’t anticipate, we document it with photos, write a change order with a firm price, and nothing proceeds until you sign it. That’s the discipline that has kept our projects within a few percent of the agreed cost across 4,000-plus jobs since 2007. Every window installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise and a documented photo record of the opening condition before, during, and after.

There’s a safe middle ground for Cover owners, and a hard stop. You can safely check the balance shoe for visible cracks, verify the sash lock engages fully, and clear weep holes with a pipe cleaner or compressed air. What you should not attempt: removing a sash with a failed balance, because the sudden release of spring tension can damage the frame or cause injury; cutting or drilling into an IGU to “defog” it, which destroys the unit and voids any remaining warranty; or prying at the frame to address a sticky latch, which bends the keeper and turns a $45 part into a $200 repair.

Full-unit replacement demands precise squaring, shimming, and fastening to California’s Title 24 energy code, plus proper flashing integration with the weather-resistive barrier. We’ve re-done enough homeowner and handyman installs in San Jose to know where the shortcuts hide. Call (669) 271-8644 and we’ll schedule a free estimate with a written price before any work starts.
