Which Jerith Models This Applies To

Jerith’s residential line breaks into three series that matter for San Jose additions and ADUs: the Classic, the Signature, and the Buckingham. The Classic uses 5/8-inch pickets with pressed-spear tops and a two-rail frame; the Signature steps to 3/4-inch pickets with a heavier rail and cast-aluminum finials; the Buckingham carries 1-inch pickets, a three-rail frame, and welded corner gussets. To identify yours, check the inside face of the bottom rail for a stamped date code and series letter (C, S, or B). Post caps are not interchangeable across series: Classic caps press on, Signature caps thread onto a welded stud, and Buckingham caps lock with a concealed set screw. We stock OEM Jerith hardware and certified aftermarket equivalents from Specrail for same-series matches. The aftermarket hinge sets use 304 stainless pins where Jerith uses 316, which is fine inland but worth the OEM upgrade within five miles of the bay where salt air accelerates crevice corrosion.

• Picket tops show white corrosion bloom. The powder coat has micro-cracked at the spear point, exposing cast aluminum to San Jose’s winter condensation cycle. This is cosmetic until the wall thickness drops below 0.050 inch, at which point the picket will snap under lateral load.
• Rail-to-post connections rattle or gap. The concealed tension bracket has fatigued or the self-tapping screw has stripped in the aluminum wall. Jerith’s bracket uses a #12-14 thread-forming screw; replacing with a standard #12 sheet-metal screw guarantees recurrence.
• Post leans despite firm soil. The internal steel reinforcement has corroded at the concrete interface. Jerith sets the steel sleeve 2 inches above grade for drainage; installers who pour flush with the sleeve create a capillary trap that rots the insert in 4 to 7 years.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s safe owner territory and there’s territory where we earn our rate. You can check a latch backset with a tape measure, tighten a post cap set screw with a 3/16-inch Allen key, and spot the difference between surface corrosion and structural loss. What we don’t recommend: drilling out a seized hinge barrel (the bit walks in soft aluminum and scores the frame), attempting to re-tension a sagging gate without a come-along and proper blocking (the gate weighs 80 to 140 pounds depending on series and width), or pouring a new post base without verifying the sleeve elevation against Jerith’s 2-inch minimum.
