To identify what you have, check the orange-printed labeling on any exposed membrane edge or the stamped code on aluminum profiles. DITRA-HEAT-DUO, for instance, carries an additional thermal break layer that changes your tile thinset spec. For profiles, the SCHIENE line is straight-edge only; RENO handles floor-height transitions between tile and a lower surface like LVP or hardwood. The OEM Schluter part is worth the premium on waterproofing components, KERDI in particular, because the fleece bonding layer is proprietary. On transition profiles, quality aftermarket equivalents from M-D Building Products or Genesis exist, but we spec Schluter for color consistency and exact gauge matching. We’ve seen 3/8-inch tile jobs ruined by a 10mm profile sold as “equivalent” that left a visible lip.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

• Tile cracks running parallel to cabinet bases. This usually means the DITRA uncoupling membrane has debonded from the subfloor, often from a plywood subfloor that wasn’t primed with Schluter-PRIMER-U or from using modified thinset where unmodified was specified. The tile and grout aren’t failing; the movement absorption layer underneath has gone static.
• Water staining on drywall below countertop edges or at sink backsplashes. KERDI-BAND seam tape has pulled away from a KERDI-FIX joint, or the installer skipped the 2-inch overlap minimum at membrane seams. DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can verify the Schluter part number from exposed membrane labeling, measure profile runs with a tape, and check for obvious debonding by tapping the tile with the plastic handle of a screwdriver, listening for the hollow sound that indicates a failed DITRA bond. What we don’t recommend is cutting into a DITRA-HEAT system to trace a cable fault, or stripping KERDI from drywall without knowing whether the wall behind it is greenboard, cement board, or KERDI-BOARD that needs to stay intact. The 120-volt heating cable is factory-spliced and not field-repairable with wire nuts; Schluter’s repair kit requires locating the break within a few inches, which takes a thermal camera and a meter that reads ohms and nano-farads.
